The road climbs into the Apuan Alps and the landscape turns white — great walls of pure Carrara marble rising on both sides. Fantiscritti is the most famous quarry basin in Carrara, where Michelangelo came in person to select the marble for the David, the Pietà and the Moses. The scale of the quarry is difficult to comprehend until you are standing inside it.

The drive from Fantiscritti to Colonnata is one of the most dramatic in Italy — tunnels blasted through solid marble, hairpin bends cut into the mountainside, sudden panoramas where white stone meets green forest and blue sky. Colonnata clings to the mountain above the quarries, a village of quarry workers and one of the great food traditions of Tuscany.

The afternoon is yours. A walk along the famous wooden pier of Forte dei Marmi stretching out over the clear Tyrrhenian Sea. Or a stop in Pisa to see the Piazza dei Miracoli at your own pace — the Leaning Tower, the Baptistery, the Cathedral. Or Lucca, with its Renaissance walls and perfectly preserved medieval centre.
